Transition Clients from Intensive Incarceration (Reentry) into Drug Court Outpatient Treatment
A critical aspect of successful reintegration into the law-abiding society will Be the actual transition from incarceration into the free-world. The Adult Outpatient and Reentry programs will work together in a number of methods in the final months before the clients are released in order to reduce the clients' problems during transition as much as possible. The following methods are being utilized to give the clients an understanding of the new environment and responsibilities that are part of the Outpatient program. These transition methods will give the clients a gradual exposure to the differences between the programs and what is expected by the Outpatient program. These methods will also give the clients access to current Outpatient clients who have demonstrated the ability to succeed in the Outpatient program. It is hoped that this type of gradual exposure will give the Reentry clients the ability to slowly acclimate themselves to the demands and responsibilities of the free-world. Reentry clients will be subject to UA's and breath tests while in the transition groups. Reentry clients will become eligible when they have 60 days or less left until release and will be evaluated at that time for participation in the transition groups. Therefore, all of the following transition methods will be available to the clients 60 days prior to release, but the clients' participation will be determined by how well the client is progressing through the Reentry program. Transition Methods:
I. Outpatient counselors will attend and conduct in-jail therapy groups and lectures. This will provide an orientation to the counselors as well as the Outpatient program and allow the counselors to build rapport with the Reentry clients.
II. Reentry clients will attend Phase I outpatient educational lecture and Phase II therapy groups. This will allow the clients to actually experience outpatient treatment with the outpatient clients, counselors, settings, and rules and regulations.
III. Reentry clients will be assigned a mentor from upper level (Phase III, IV, and Alumni) Outpatient Drug Court clients. The mentors will assist the Reentry clients in developing a healthy recovery, treatment, and social support system.
IV. Reentry clients will obtain full-time employment while in a jail work-release program. The clients will be able to maintain employment by being moved into a new housing arrangement at Iberia Law Enforcement Center. Clients will be transported to their jobs in the morning and then to the Outpatient program for therapy/lectures and urine screens following the end of the work day and finally back to the jail. Case mangers and/or Compliance Officer will conduct bi-weekly compliance checks on clients with employers
